A wood pellet patio heater brings both warmth and character to an outdoor space. The tall flame in the glass tube creates a striking focal point on the terrace. A FireRocket does not need mains electricity or a connected gas cylinder while it is burning. It uses wood pellets as fuel; for ignition, follow the manual and use a separate handheld gas torch, which is not included.
This makes a wood pellet patio heater an appealing option for private gardens, patios and other suitable outdoor spaces. The appliance still involves a real fire: careful positioning, supervision and following the manual are therefore always part of responsible use.
What is a wood pellet patio heater?
A wood pellet patio heater is a freestanding outdoor heater. Instead of electricity or a gas cylinder, it uses compressed wood pellets as fuel. With FireRocket, the flame is visible inside a vertical glass tube, making the heat source an atmospheric feature too.
The heater is filled and lit manually. There is no electric fan, ignition, thermostat or app. Natural airflow supports combustion, and warm air rises through the appliance.
Designed for gardens and patios
FireRocket is intended for outdoor use, not for heating a home. Never use an outdoor pellet heater indoors or in a fully enclosed space. Under a canopy, adequate permanent ventilation is essential; always follow the conditions and safety clearances in the manual for your model.
Wood pellets, gas or electricity?
Each type of patio heating has its own character. An electric heater often starts heating immediately, but requires a suitable power connection and has no real flame. A gas patio heater uses a gas cylinder as its fuel supply. A FireRocket burns wood pellets, combining warmth with a visible flame display.
Wood pellets are generally made from compressed wood fibres. That does not mean combustion is emission-free. Avoid absolute claims such as carbon-neutral or emission-free. Choose good-quality, certified wood pellets: they support more consistent combustion. Choose a suitable quality with a low ash content and keep the wood pellets dry to help limit combustion problems and extra unburned residue.
How to use a wood pellet patio heater
The exact steps vary by model and are set out in the supplied manual. The basics are:
- Before use, check that all components are correctly assembled and undamaged.
- Stand the appliance upright on a level, stable, non-combustible surface.
- Keep the required space around and above the heater clear.
- Fill the reservoir with the recommended quantity of dry ENplus A1 wood pellets.
- Light the wood pellets as described in the manual. FireRocket recommends a separate handheld butane gas torch for this.
- Check that a stable, upright flame develops and remain present throughout use.
Wood pellets and the handheld gas torch are not included. Never use petrol, methylated spirits, bioethanol or other liquid fuels to light the heater or intensify an existing flame.
The benefits of a FireRocket on your patio
A visible flame display
The vertical fire is visible from several directions. This makes the heater an eye-catching feature beside a seating area, during dinner or over drinks. Its flame display clearly sets a FireRocket apart from an electric patio heater.
No cable or gas cylinder while burning
The heater works without a socket and does not use a gas cylinder as its main fuel supply. This avoids a power cable across the patio and gives you more freedom to choose a suitable position. A separate gas torch is still recommended for ignition.
A choice of sizes
According to FireRocket’s product information, the compact FireRocket 83 cm has a reservoir for 1.8 kg of wood pellets and burns for approximately 1.5 hours. The taller FireRocket Pro has a reservoir for 3.5 kg of wood pellets and burns for approximately 2 hours. Actual burn time depends on factors including the wood pellets and outdoor conditions.
What should you consider before buying?
Size and positioning
Consider not only the heater's height, but also the clear space required for safe use. Measure the intended location and allow for furniture, parasols, fences, plants and any overhead canopy. The heater must stand securely and must not block an escape route.
How you plan to use it
Think about how long you usually sit outside and how much emphasis you want to place on the flame display. Reservoir capacity and indicative burn time can help you choose. Additional local fire safety rules may apply to professional use; check these before positioning the heater.
Protection and storage
Do not use a FireRocket in strong winds, heavy rain or snow. Do not allow hot glass to get wet, and store the fully cooled heater in a dry place protected from rain. Wood pellets must also be kept dry in sealed packaging.
Cleaning and safe maintenance
Allow the appliance to cool completely before touching or cleaning any components. Remove cold ash and clear the air openings during regular maintenance between uses. You can carefully top up the wood pellets while the heater is burning; avoid touching the metal parts around the filling opening and keep the bag of wood pellets at a safe distance. When needed, clean the glass tube with a soft cloth or kitchen paper and a suitable glass cleaner. Do not apply cold cleaning products to hot glass.
Check the glass tube regularly for cracks or other damage. Do not use the heater with damaged glass. Also inspect the fixings, wheels and other components, and use only suitable replacement parts.
