A pellet stove in a small garden or on the patio: choosing the right spot

In a small garden, do not choose by product height alone. Check the ground surface, walkways, clearances, wind and storage before placing a FireRocket on your patio.

Approx. 3 min read

Even in a smaller garden, visible flames can add plenty of atmosphere. But the first question is not which stove looks the smallest. It is whether you have enough safe space for the appliance and the required clearances. This placement guide helps you assess a spot for a FireRocket outdoor pellet stove, whatever its size.

Start with your patio layout, then use the manual for your chosen model. A product photo, lifestyle image or 3D model is not a dimensionally accurate installation guide. The final location must meet all the requirements for that model.

Map out the entire area of use

Do not just measure the empty paving slab next to your outdoor seating. Think about where chairs are pushed back, where people walk and where children or pets go. Keep a clear route to the house and garden exit. The stove must not block that route.

Check the space above the appliance for branches, parasols, awnings and roof edges. An awning that is rolled up now may be extended later. Choose a spot that remains suitable during normal use of the patio, without constantly having to move furniture or accessories.

Choose a suitable ground surface first

The FireRocket must stand upright on a level, stable and non-combustible surface. Gravel, uneven paving slabs or a sloping surface can affect stability. Simply laying down a slab does not automatically make the ground suitable: the entire setup must be stable and comply with the manual.

Do not place the stove on a garden table or an improvised raised platform to get a better view of the fire. Choose the model based on its actual height and the space you have available at ground level.

Low, slim or tall?

Think about the height at which you would like to see the flames and how much space the whole appliance takes up. Check the model's height, width and depth on the product page. A low or slim design may look different beside outdoor lounge furniture than a tall model, but its appearance does not determine whether the spot is suitable.

A shorter model still needs safety clearance. A slim profile does not mean the required clear zone is small. Compare the full product dimensions and the manual, not just the height or a photo taken from the front.

Consider wind and neighbours

The warmth you feel depends on factors including wind, the outdoor temperature and the distance to your seat. Do not place the stove closer to furniture than permitted to feel more warmth. Even a small garden is an outdoor space where heat can be carried away by the wind.

Prevent smoke from drifting towards neighbours, open windows or ventilation openings. Do not use the FireRocket in a conservatory or garden room with closed walls, not even with a window open. If the walls are fully open, it can be used, provided you follow the placement rules. Never use it indoors. For use under a patio cover, only the requirements for your own model apply.

Plan for storage

Set aside a dry, sheltered storage space. Check which base your chosen model has and how it can be moved according to the manual. If the model has wheels, use them only once the fire is out and the appliance has cooled down completely. Do not change the setup while it is burning.

Not sure which model to choose? Read which FireRocket model suits your patio or what to check under a patio cover. You can find the dimensions of each model under FireRocket pellet stoves.

Before buying, make a simple sketch showing seating, walkways and clear space. If you cannot maintain the required clearances, do not choose a stove for that spot. For help choosing a model, you can contact FireRocket.
