Choosing the best pellet heater starts with one important question: what do you want to use it for? An outdoor pellet heater is a different product from an electrically powered pellet stove used to heat a living room or home. FireRocket focuses on outdoor use: real flames, pleasant warmth nearby and atmosphere on the patio, without a fixed electricity or gas connection while burning. A separate handheld gas torch is used for ignition. This guide explains which features really matter.
The current models at a glance
| Feature | FireRocket 83 cm | FireRocket Pro 170 cm |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 83 cm | 170 cm |
| Wood pellet reservoir | approx. 1.8 kg | approx. 3.5 kg |
| Indicative burn time per full reservoir | approx. 1.5 hours | approx. 2 hours |
These figures are FireRocket’s current product specifications, not independent test results. Burn time is indicative and may vary with wood pellet quality, airflow and weather conditions.
First decide what you want the pellet heater for
If you want an atmospheric heat source for dinners, drinks and evenings outdoors, an outdoor model suits your purpose. If you want to heat a home or several rooms on an ongoing basis, you need a different type of appliance. FireRocket is not a central heating stove, has no thermostat or app and does not connect to an indoor flue.
Outdoor pellet heater or indoor pellet stove?
A traditional indoor pellet stove often has electronics, a fan, a feed auger and a flue. A FireRocket burns without electricity and is intended for a garden, patio or another suitable outdoor location. This makes it particularly appealing if you want to enjoy a visible fire outdoors without a fixed installation.
Use this FireRocket outdoors only, not for home heating. Never place it indoors or in a conservatory or garden room with closed walls, not even with a window open. If the walls are fully open, it can be used, provided you follow the placement rules. Follow your chosen model’s manual for positioning, ventilation and safety clearances, including under a canopy.
Think about its regular position
Measure the available space beforehand. Consider not just the appliance's dimensions, but also clear space around and above the heater. A tall flame attracts attention and is best appreciated in an open spot where people do not constantly need to pass the hot glass.
Also check that the surface is level, firm and non-combustible. A wheeled model may be less stable on a soft, sloping or unstable surface. A canopy needs extra consideration too: there must be sufficient overhead clearance and permanent ventilation.
Which features determine the best choice?
1. Size and appearance
A compact model takes up less space and suits a smaller patio or seating area where you sit closer to the flame display. The compact FireRocket therefore suits those who want atmosphere without the heater dominating the whole outdoor space.
If you want a taller vertical flame and a more striking focal point for a larger patio, a tall model may be a more natural choice. The FireRocket Pro is designed to catch the eye and gives off warmth in its immediate surroundings. Bigger does not automatically mean better, however: available space and distance from seating matter just as much.
2. Perceived warmth outdoors
Outdoor warmth cannot reliably be expressed as a number of square metres you can heat. Wind, outdoor temperature, how open the patio is and distance from the appliance affect what you feel. Do not choose based on claims about home heating capacity or kilowatts, but on where you sit and the warmth you want to experience.
An outdoor pellet heater mainly provides warmth close to the appliance. In a sheltered spot, that warmth lingers better than in a fully open, windy garden. A taller model can have a stronger visual effect, while a more compact model can be pleasant if you can position it closer to the seating area without reducing the required safety clearance.
3. Reservoir and burn time
Reservoir capacity determines how many wood pellets you can use per load. Actual burn time also depends on wood pellet quality, airflow, weather and how the appliance burns. Check current product specifications and treat stated burn time as a practical indication, not a duration guaranteed to the minute.
Think about your use too. A compact reservoir may be enough for a short gathering over drinks. For a long evening, a larger reservoir may be practical because it needs refilling less often. Both models can be carefully refilled while burning, in accordance with the product-specific manual. Never leave a burning heater unattended.
4. No fixed electricity or gas connection
An important FireRocket benefit is that the heater does not need a socket or connected gas cylinder while burning. You fill the reservoir with wood pellets and light them according to the manual, for example with a suitable gas torch. The torch is only used for ignition; the heater then burns wood pellets.
This makes positioning flexible and avoids cables across the patio. It also means there is no automatic thermostat, remote control or app. If you mainly want a fully automated heating system, you are looking for a different product.
5. Mobility and stability
Wheels make an outdoor heater easier to move when not in use. Check that the model stands securely, any braked wheels are locked and all fixings are properly tightened. Never move the appliance while it is burning or still hot.
A wheeled model is still a heavy, hot product. Use its wheels for gentle movement on a level surface, not to cross thresholds, gravel or changes in height while the appliance is fully assembled.
6. Material and weather protection
The material affects appearance, maintenance and weather resistance. Coated steel and stainless steel each have their own properties. Even an outdoor product stays in good condition for longer if, once completely cool, you store it dry and protected. Do not allow rainwater to remain in or on the appliance for long periods.
Also look at the availability of fragile components, such as the glass section. Glass can be damaged by impact or incorrect assembly. Correct assembly and careful storage therefore matter more than the material name on the product page alone.
Which wood pellets should you use?
Choose consistent quality
Good-quality wood pellets help the heater burn evenly and reduce unnecessary ash and smoke. FireRocket recommends good-quality ENplus A1 wood pellets. Always also check your model's manual for permitted dimensions and other fuel requirements.
Do not put logs, coal, garden waste or liquid fuels in the reservoir. These fuels can cause an unpredictable flame, excessive smoke or damage.
Keep wood pellets dry
Wood pellets absorb moisture easily. Damp wood pellets can break apart, burn less evenly and leave more residue. Store sealed bags dry and protected. Do not place an opened bag directly on a damp floor, and close it securely after use.
Ease of use and maintenance
Lighting requires a brief manual process
A FireRocket does not start at the press of a button. You fill the heater, fit the specified components and light the wood pellets as described in the manual. Then give the fire time to become stable. This manual character is part of an electricity-free outdoor model and, for many users, part of the experience of a real fire.
Cleaning once completely cool
Ash and combustion residue affect airflow. Let the heater burn out and cool completely before cleaning it. Empty the ash tray according to the manual, remove loose residue and regularly check the glass, wheels and fixings. Do not use methods or cleaning products that are unsuitable for the material.
Safety is part of the choice
A pellet heater has real flames and becomes very hot. The best heater is therefore also one that can stand safely in your available space. Before buying, check that you can meet the safety conditions.
- Only use the appliance outdoors or in a suitable outdoor space with good permanent ventilation.
- Place it on a level, stable, non-combustible surface.
- Maintain the clearances in the manual from walls, ceilings, parasols, furniture and other combustible materials.
- Keep children and pets away from hot glass and metal.
- Never leave a burning appliance unattended.
- Only move or disassemble the heater once it has cooled completely.
Compact or Pro: which FireRocket model suits you?
The choice between models is mainly about size, appearance, reservoir and where you use the heater.
- Compact FireRocket: suits a smaller seating area, patio or space around a table where a more modest size is preferred.
- FireRocket Pro: suitable if you want a tall vertical flame and a more striking design feature for your garden or patio.
- Version and material: compare current variants, stock status and specifications in the pellet heater collection.
Do not focus only on the largest model. Measure the space, decide where people will sit and check that you have sufficient safety clearance all around. That way, you choose a pellet heater that not only looks good but also fits practically.
Is the cheapest pellet heater the best buy?
A low purchase price says little about overall value. Consider construction, stability, glass quality, material finish, available parts and a clear manual. A model that suits your use and is carefully maintained is often a better buy than one with features you do not need outdoors.
Always compare current prices and availability on the collection page. This avoids basing your decision on an outdated figure in an article.
