Why is choosing the right wood pellets important?

The right wood pellets directly affect your FireRocket's flame display, ash levels and cleaning. Learn how to recognise, choose and store suitable fuel.

Approx. 4 min read

The wood pellets you use have a major influence on how an outdoor pellet heater performs. Dry, consistent wood pellets help the flame burn steadily. Damp, dusty or contaminated wood pellets, on the other hand, can cause more smoke, unburned residue and deposits. Choosing the right fuel makes use more enjoyable and reduces unnecessary cleaning.

FireRocket recommends good-quality ENplus A1 wood pellets. This certification sets requirements for factors including moisture content, ash content, size and the fuel's mechanical quality. Always also check which size is specified in the manual for your model.

Why does wood pellet quality make a difference?

A wood pellet may seem simple, but the raw material, compression, storage and quantity of fines vary between products. Those differences become noticeable as soon as you light the heater. Good-quality wood pellets light more predictably, produce a more consistent flame display and generally leave less residue.

A steadier flame display

Wood pellets with a consistent size and composition burn more steadily. This matters with a FireRocket because the tall flame display is an important part of the experience. Large variations in moisture or density can make the flame erratic or make ignition more difficult.

Less ash and fewer deposits

Each burn leaves some ash behind. Good-quality wood pellets reduce excessive ash formation and hard, glass-like deposits in the burner area. This makes it easier to keep the air openings clear and reduces cleaning time.

Less risk of disruption

Excessive dust, moisture or foreign particles can obstruct passages and the air supply within the appliance. This can lead to harder ignition, an unstable flame or extra smoke. Do not use loose sawdust, broken wood pellets or fuel of unclear origin and composition.

Which wood pellets does FireRocket recommend?

Preferably choose ENplus A1 wood pellets made from 100% untreated wood. Follow the dimensions specified in the product manual for your FireRocket model. If you are unsure which diameter is suitable, contact FireRocket. Do not use wood pellets containing glue, paint, plastic or other unknown additives.

Certification is more reliable than the appearance of the wood pellets alone. Colour can vary with the type of wood used, for example, and tells you little about quality on its own. Check the information and certification number on the packaging.

Why ENplus A1?

ENplus A1 is a recognised quality class for wood pellets. Its requirements cover properties that matter for combustion, such as moisture, ash, dust and durability. A valid certification statement on the packaging offers more reassurance than a general description such as premium or extra clean.

How to check a new bag of wood pellets

You do not need a laboratory to recognise obvious problems. Before use, check:

  • that the packaging is dry and undamaged;
  • that the wood pellets are firm and have not mostly crumbled;
  • that there is not an unusually large amount of dust or sawdust at the bottom of the bag;
  • that there are no damp patches, mould or unusual smells;
  • that size, certification and origin are clearly stated on the packaging.

Do not use a batch if the wood pellets are visibly damp, swollen or badly broken down. If you are unsure of their quality or suitability, do not use that batch. Check the certification and specifications on the packaging or contact the supplier.

Keeping wood pellets dry

Even good-quality wood pellets deteriorate if they absorb moisture. Store bags in a dry, well-ventilated storage area, protected from rain and condensation. Do not place them directly on a damp floor, and keep an opened bag securely closed.

Only take outside the amount of wood pellets you plan to use. Do not leave an open bag next to the heater: not only because of moisture, but also because fuel must be kept away from a burning appliance.

What happens with unsuitable wood pellets?

Unsuitable fuel can cause various signs:

  • the wood pellets are difficult to light;
  • the flame stays low, becomes erratic or goes out early;
  • more visible smoke is produced than usual;
  • an unusually large amount of ash or hard deposits remains;
  • the air openings become dirty more quickly.

If the heater behaves unusually, stop using it as soon as it is safe to do so and allow it to go out and cool completely. Clean the appliance according to the manual, then only try wood pellets that meet the specified quality and size requirements.

Good fuel and good maintenance go hand in hand

Cleaning remains essential even with ENplus A1 wood pellets. Only remove cold ash and combustion residue once the appliance has cooled completely, keep the air openings clear and clean the glass tube only when cool too. This maintenance between uses is separate from careful refilling while burning. Good-quality wood pellets reduce the cleaning needed, but do not replace it.

Always read the manual for your own model and browse the current FireRocket outdoor pellet heaters. The FireRocket 83 cm and FireRocket Pro pages provide product-specific information about the reservoir and use.
